Happy Halloween

Posted by eric on October 30, 2011

As we prepare for Halloween this year, we're hoping to take a healthier cut at the whole process. It's not easy - especially with young children whose idea of a great Halloween is to indulge in sugar excesses.

Some of the things we're going to do include:

  • Handing out chips instead of candy. Still not great, as many of the chips will have more fat and sodium than I'd prefer, but it will help avoid at least a little sugar for our visitors.
  • Portioning the candy our kids bring in so that we control how much they're eating. For the most part, and I know it's wasteful, we end up throwing away much of what they're given.
  • Making sure they eat a reasonably healthy meal before they start gorging on candy. This will hopefully fill them up enough on good stuff that they won't eat so much bad stuff out on the trail.

It's not perfect - but then again, it's okay to splurge once in awhile. As long as they don't go crazy on sugary stuff as a norm, a couple of days of enjoying their "booty" won't hurt them. Maybe we'll get them on the rower for a bit, just to keep them honest ;-)

Stay fit everyone.
